Are ampersands generally permissible in personal statements and/or diversity statements? I'm afraid that the question was non-specific enough that I wasn't able to find it in either the Powerscore forums or on Google.

As needed, yes. There are certain proper names that require them (Barnes & Noble, anyone?), and thus would be appropriate. As a substitute for "and," though, I'd avoid it.

So, it depends on context.
