I was between A/D on this one and ultimately didn't choose A. I know he maintained something in his own pantings but how do we know they specifically contained figures/images?

Hi enzee,

We know from the middle of the second paragraph that Porter's paintings were actively tied to traditional African art forms and that his genre portrait showed extensive knowledge of the culture of multiple African peoples. We know he was aware of the various iconography. For portraits, there must be figures, because otherwise, what are the portraits of?

We don't see any clear support in the passage for answer choice (D). His research was on earlier artists, and his art wouldn't prove theories about their past art.

Hope that helps!
