I am having a hard time understanding why answer choice D is the best choice. Is there proof for this in the passage?

Mainly, this answer choice comes out of the sentence that begins in L8:

Primatology is a particularly apt vehicle for such themes because primates seem so much like ourselves that they provide ready material for scientists’ conscious and unconscious projections of their beliefs about nature and culture.

This sentence would tell you that scientists who study primates (primatologists) are probably more apt to project their conscious and unconscious beliefs onto the primates they study. That interpretation lines up rather well with the description in answer choice (D).
