Rita asks:
Hi, Could you please explain question 20? I chose D, because I thought withholding vasopressin helped to restore plasma osmality by changing the volume of plasma in the blood.

Thanks,
Rita
Hi, Rita, the question asks how the "withholding of vasopressin" functions in restoring plasma osmolality. First, explain the question to yourself. What exactly does "vasopressin" do? What would it mean to "withhold" it?

Now return to the passage and read exactly what it says about vasopressin. Start around line 36. Now read until you are confident that you understand what vasopressin does, specifically what happens in its absence. On line 40 you may notice "inhibiting secretion of vasopressin." Bingo. Now your job is to find why vasopressin might not be secreted. Return right before this line and reread. Okay, so vasopressin is withheld after people drink too much water. Now keep reading to figure out what this accomplishes. Okay, so less vasopressin leads to more urine and less thirst. What does this do? It "prevents further dilution of body fluids." There's your prephrase, an excellent match for answer choice (B)!

Answer choice (D) is out of scope for this question and actually refers back to concepts discussed earlier in the passage. Remember that the answers to local questions will be almost always found within the section of the passage that discusses the concept in question.
