Complete Question Explanation

The correct answer choice is (D).

Answer choice (A): This passage was concerned with more than just defining philanthropy, it also examined the effectiveness and intentions behind it.

Answer choice (B): There is no theorist group which is the central point of this passage - the Victorians were the group talked about and that is a historical label not a name for a type of theorist.

Answer choice (C): The passage does more than just narrate the evolution of philanthropy throughout Victorian era until now - there are real criticisms and insights offered throughout, which makes (D) a stronger answer choice.

Answer choice (D): This is the correct answer choice. This captures how modern critics view Victorian philanthropy, which is the subject of the passage.

Answer choice (E): There were no dilemmas faced by workers that were discussed at length - philanthropy was the idea talked about throughout the passage, and that is not a worker's dilemma but rather a response to social need.

I thought the primary purpose of the passage was to criticize the modern evaluations of Victorian philanthropy or to defend the Victorian philanthropists. I thought the last paragraph demonstrated how the author was defending the philanthropists.

Hi pandapaws!

You mention defending Victorian philanthropists, so I assume that you are referring to answer choice (B). That answer choice states that the primary purpose of the passage is "defending the work of an influential group of theorists." I think a problem with this answer choice is that I don't see the Victorian philanthropists as an "influential group of theorists." Rather, I understand the theorists to be the critics of Victorian philanthropy.
