I thought the correct answer was D because I believe both passages mention the need for narrative but I didn't see how abstraction is the correct answer (A).

Both authors WANT there to be some greater emphasis on narrative, Chris, but that's not what is currently typical of writing in these two professions, which is what the question is asking for.

In the first paragraph of passage A, the author wrote: "They assign books with formulaic arguments that transform history into an abstract debate... ."

In the second paragraph of passage B, the author says: "But because legal analysis strips the human narrative content from the abstract, canonical legal form of the case... ."

Thus, both authors claim that the writing that is currently typical of their field is, to some degree, abstract.
