I'm having a hard time understanding why C is correct. I chose B because it is supported by the text. However, I see how it is flawed and fails to encompass the point of the entire passage.

I chose not to pick C because it mentions Walker popularizing the cakewalk by "capitalizing on the complex cultural mix." However, the last paragraph discusses Walker winning over the two groups (African and European Americans) by emphasizing its fundamental (which I interpreted meaning 'original') grace and by emphasizing the most authentic version of the cakewalk. I see these two points of emphasis as working against the 'complex cultural mix' of satires and parodies that the passage discusses. What am I misunderstanding? Thanks!

Hi cjtoon!

You are right that answer choice (B) doesn't capture the entire passage. Rather, it just covers material contained within the final paragraph of the passage.

Answer choice (C) is correct because it seems to capture the entire passage as a whole. "Walker popularized the cakewalk" seems to cover the first paragraph and potentially the final one as well, and "by capitalizing on the complex cultural mix that had developed from the dance's original blend of satire and cultural preservation, together with the effects of later parodies" seems to be captured by the second, third, and final paragraphs.
