Complete Question Explanation
(See the complete passage discussion here: lsat/viewtopic.php?t=13653)

The correct answer choice is (B)

This Global Reference question requires a broad understanding of the author’s perspective, but prephrasing with any precision can in many cases be quite difficult.

Answer choice (A): The author does not make this judgment, but rather says that laypeople would tend to be less supportive of such activities.

Answer choice (B): This is the correct answer choice. The author says that the opinion regarding air travel is that the risk of a plane crash is taken on involuntarily.

Answer choice (C): The author neither makes nor provides basis for such a comparison, so this choice fails the Fact Test.

Answer choice (D): The author provides the asteroid scenario as an example of involuntary risk, since no choice is involved, but says that almost every risk involves some degree of choice.

Answer choice (E): The author mentions asteroids as an example of involuntary risk but does not say that natural disasters are the main type of involuntary risk (note that people make choices regarding where they want to live and work).

Is the reason answer choice B correct because policy experts dont care about whether an action was voluntary or not rather they are interested in the aggregate lives at stake?

Hi Emily,

Yep, that's it exactly. Great work! Doing the work to answer questions like this for yourself is an important key to learning the LSAT.

Can you guys delve more on the answer's explanation? Because sincerely I don't get it. What is the relation between "the aggregates lives at stake" and the answer?

I really think the answer for this question is based on that the author does not consider voluntariness as a metric for government's risk management. So experts are more focused on the aggregates lives at stake RATHER THAN voluntariness and that is why answer B is correct.

Hi, Gintriag,

Emilysnoddon was referring to another principle that the government should first consider in policy deliberations (lines 48-49): "the government should attempt to save as many lives as it can, subject to the limited public and private resources devoted to risk reduction."

Emilysnoddon contrasted this principle as you did with the idea of voluntariness, which the author considers irrelevant for policy decisions.

It seems as though you both agree and have both answered the question correctly.
