Hi smatsinye,

I can see where you were tempted by answer choice (C). The end of the passage sees the author bemoaning the replacement of rare ingredients in original formulas with chemical compounds. However, there are two possible reasons the author may object. First, it could be that the author objects to the chemical compounds. Second, it could be that the author objects to the changes themselves.

The author of this passage doesn't object to modern perfumes because they use synthetic compounds. In fact, the author praises the use of synthetic chemicals right around line 17. The objection isn't then, isn't the difference between natural chemicals and synthetic, as answer choice (C) suggests. The issue is the change from the original formula. That's what answer choice (E) describes. The author prizes the talent of great perfumers, and objects to alterations in their carefully developed formula. Altering the alteration, to make it more like the original, would be something the author would then support.

Hope that helps!
Rachael
