Passage Discussion

Paragraph One:

The author begins by presenting an apparently common misconception - that the glass in windows changes over time, like a very thick liquid. This mistaken belief, sometimes used to explain old rippled windows, may be based on the fact that the atoms in both liquid and solid glass lack a fixed crystal structure. Rather than a freezing point, glass has a “transition temperature,” which tends to fall within a range of several hundred degrees Celsius, below which glass becomes a solid despite its lack of a fixed atomic crystal structure.

Paragraph Two:


Here, the author turns to evidence refuting the belief that medieval cathedral stained glass is thicker at the bottom because of a very slow flow over the past several centuries. Gravity can cause some solids to slightly flow, but according to the research of Edgar Zanotto, the amount of time needed to achieve any noticeable flow would be greater than the amount of time that the universe has been in existence.

Paragraph Three:

Continuing the discussion of Zanotto’s study, the author provides that any flow that might take place would depend on the glass’ chemical composition, and would likely require several trillion years to achieve any noticeable flow. So, even if medieval stained glass had impurities that would speed the process somewhat, a few centuries would not be enough time for the effect to occur.

Paragraph Four:

In the closing paragraph, the author provides another explanation for the increasing thickness that is often found in medieval glass: in the 1800’s, glass was cut from discs made from flattened glass globes, and the natural way to situate uneven, rippled glass was to have the thick part at the bottom. Since then, glass has become much more uniform and flat, first being made from the melt on a rod, then, more recently, by floating glass in liquid form over tin.

The author’s Tone is academic and well-reasoned.

The author’s Argument is that the manufacturing process of the time was the true cause of a phenomenon that has been persistently misconstrued.

The Main Point of the passage is that despite a common misconception about glass slowly flowing downwards, allegedly causing medieval windows to be thicker at the bottom, the change in thickness is actually attributable to the glassmaking process of the era.

Hi!

Thank you so much for this explanation. I have a hard time dissecting RC passages. My accuracy is not good, and I always run out of time after reading two passages. Do you recommend that I break down the passages in this way, handwriting paragraph summaries, when I complete RC passages without timing myself? Please let me know what are your recommendations to improve accuracy and time on the RC. I would greatly appreciate any advice you can provide!

Hi Lola!

Breaking down passages like this, while untimed, is a great way to practice RC. I'd recommend you go through a passage like this:

1) Read the first paragraph. Stop. Think about what the main idea of that paragraph is. What would you go back to that paragraph to find? You don't need to get into specifics. For example, you could sum up a paragraph as "a list of the advantages of court adjudication over family mediation." You don't need to know what each of those advantages in the list is. Just know that if you are asked about advantages of court adjudication, that's the paragraph to go back to.

2) Repeat with each of the following paragraphs, one at a time. Be sure to keep track of the transitions between paragraphs. Is the author shifting to a different perspective? Jumping to a different point in time? Answering a previously posed question? Challenging the hypothesis described in a previous paragraph? Etc.

3) When you're done reading, write out your VIEWSTAMP analysis. What are the different viewpoints, structure (you basically already have this from steps 1 & 2), tone, arguments, and main point?

Do this with several passages until you've trained yourself to automatically go through passages in this way without having to write everything down. On test day, you won't have time to write out as much. But you can still read a paragraph, pause to think about the main idea of that paragraph and underline the most important points, look for viewpoints and transitions as you read, and prephrase the main point in your head once you've complete the entire passage. Keep VIEWSTAMP in mind as you read to remind you what you should be looking for and keep yourself focused on the passage.
