Complete Question Explanation

Method of Reasoning. The correct answer choice is (D)

Answer choice (A): Although Yolanda does argue that awareness is important, she does not reach this conclusion.

Answer choice (B): This answer is also incorrect. Yolanda does make a statement about all universities, but it is not a generalization based on one university.

Answer choice (C): Yolanda does not reach this conclusion. She says that alcohol problems are not “simply” a fraternity problem. This leaves open the possibility that they are both a cultural and a fraternity problem.

Answer choice (D): This is the correct answer choice. It basically paraphrases Yolanda’s response to Sally.

Answer choice (E): Yolanda never makes this suggestion.

Hey PS!

Could you please provide an example of an “overly broad generalization” as stated in answer choice (B)?

Thank you very much.

Regards,

Andrés

Hi Andrés,

Answer choice (B) states "She makes an overly broad generalization from one university to all universities." This would be like Yolanda extrapolating a broad conclusion from a single instance of an event. For example, if she said "since there are alcohol problems at your university, it's probably the case that there are alcohol problems at all universities." There are inherent problems with that train of logic. But to be clear, that's not exactly what's happening in this stimulus. Yolanda does say that "alcohol problems exist at all universities", but it's a premise that is used in support of her argument that the problem isn't fraternities, it's cultural.
