Hello,

This new topic is a method of reasoning question (#18, with the same stim, but different question type).

Can someone please explain why (B) is correct and the other answers incorrect?

Many thanks!

Hi SwanQueen!

In this question we're being asked how Ping responds to Winston. Winston's conclusion is that the PTA has to eliminate late-night service if it is going to operate without a budget deficit. Ping points out that eliminating late-night service would cause the PTA to lose riders who leave home during the day and must return late at night, meaning they would be losing some of the daytime fares in addition to the late-night fares. We're looking for an answer choice that describes Ping's response in more abstract terms.

Answer choice (A): Ping does not redefine a term used in Winston's argument. If you were going to choose this answer choice, you would need to identify what specific term Ping redefines.

Answer choice (B): This is the correct answer. Ping questions Winston's proposal (he questions whether they should eliminate late-night service) by raising considerations not addressed by Winston (the issue of losing daytime fares from the riders who leave their homes during the day and must return home late at night).

Answer choice (C): Ping does not provide anything that would support Winston's argument that the PTA should eliminate late-night service. Instead, Ping is attacking Winston's argument.

Answer choice (D): Ping does not provide any detailed statistical evidence.

Answer choice (E): Ping does not provide a solution to the PTA's budget deficit. Ping simply questions whether Winston's proposal will solve the problem.

Hope this helps!

Best,
Kelsey
