Complete Question Explanation

Parallel Flaw—SN. The correct answer choice is (E)

This stimulus contains a Mistaken Reversal:
  • Earn > $250K  Attend Pres Bus School

Greta: Attend Pres Bus School  Earn > $250K
Because this is a Parallel question, you should look for an answer choice that contains a Mistaken Reversal.

Answer choice (A): This introduces health problems, a new term, so it does not match the stimulus.

Answer choice (B): This conclusion contains a comparison (more famous), so it does not match the conclusion.

Answer choice (C): This conclusion introduces the idea of Italians liking opera, which is a new idea (and hence not a Mistaken Reversal).

Answer choice (D): Again, this answer does not contain a Mistaken Reversal (it is more causal: nail causes luck).

Answer choice (E): This is the correct answer choice. Diagrammatically:
  • Successful Opera  Study Lang

Eileen: Study Lang  Successful Opera

what is an "overwhelming number"? isn't that another flaw in this stimulus?

Hi Ash,

I'd say "an overwhelming number" refers to something more than half, probably more than 3/4 of a given group. If you picture the CEOs who earn more than 250K that went to prestigious business schools on one side of a line, and those who did not on the other side of a line, "an overwhelming number" would mean that those who did attend such a school vastly and outsize the other group. "A great many" is a parallel concept. The idea is that there is more than just a majority---it's an extended amount.

Hope that helps!
