Even with that reword, I don't think that would make answer choice (A) preferable to answer choice (D). If (D) weren't in the equation, one reason that (A) still seems problematic to me is the mention of "someone he or she has never met," which is slightly different than what is discussed in the stimulus--namely, a distant relative (who one may have met).
