You could do a conditional diagram here but, as you've discovered, it might end up just confusing things more than helping. Think conceptually about the rules that are being given. "One should always capitalize the main words and the first and last words of a title." Does that mean that every time you capitalize, it must be a main word or the first and last word of a title? Or does it mean that when you have main words or first and last words of a title, you must capitalize them? The second interpretation makes more sense with what we've been told: If it's a main word or the first and last word of a tile, then you must capitalize it.
