Hello,

I am just want to confirm my thinking about this question. Because intensive pasteurisation is the most effective bacteria eliminating method it is less likely than McElligot's apple juice to have bacteria. This is due to the fact that McElligots apple juice goes though flash pasteurisation, a useful but not the most effective method of pastuerisation. I struggled with this question because I didn't recognise the difference between the flash and intensive until my review. Thank you.

Micah, your thinking is accurate and excellent with one caveat:

You describe "flash pasteurization" as "a useful but not the most effective method of pasteurization." This is an unwarranted assumption. There is no reason for us to conclude that "flash pasteurization" is "useful" at all. We may conclude, as you did, that "flash pasteurization" is not the most effective method of pasteurization.

I don't understand how answer choice E strengthens the conclusion. Please help!

Thanks for the question! The first thing to note is the question stem: it's a Most Strongly Supported stem, not a Strengthen stem. Although it uses the words "most support," the question is phrased so you are supporting one of the answers, not using one of the answer to support the stimulus. Thus, the first lesson is always to be careful when reading that stem, and don't assume that certain words (such as "support") automatically indicate a particular question type. The test isn't that straightforward :-D

Next, this problem is a great example of how the test makers can place ideas that are very similar in close proximity, and then force you to identify the small differences that are present. It's a close reading exercise, which tend to be particularly challenging when they appear near the end of the section as this question did. So, let's break down what happened in the stimulus first, since that will make the correct answer easier to understand.

First, we have two separate groups of terms that are used in the stimulus:
  • Pasteurization

Given that students face this question deep in the section at a point where fatigue is often a factor, you can understand why only about 30% of students answered this problem correctly.

Answer choice (A): While we know that McElligott's citrus juices are unpasteurized (last sentence), we do not have any information about McElligott's citrus juices compared to other companies, and so there is no support for this answer.

Overall, a great LSAT problem, and a really good one to study to see how the test makers attack you with similar terms. They purposefully made this problem confusing, and if you don't clearly separate out the terms used in the stimulus, this problem becomes extremely difficult. However, if you can clearly identify the terms and the game LSAC is playing, this question isn't so bad.

Believe it or not I completely did not read the question stem carefully and treated this as a Strengthen question!!! Completely changed the game.
Though, would you say this is a "Must be True" question type?

Most Strongly Supported is a subtype of Must Be True where the degree of certainty can fall a little short of 100%. Your approach to this question should be quite similar to your approach to a Must Be True question. Infer based on what the stimulus says and don't add any new information!

Answer E doesn’t seem to be supported either, being that the stem doesn’t provide a starting point of how much bacteria there is in the first place, it’s entirely possible that McElligott’s farm has in the first place much less bacteria than do most farms, and therefore could have much less bacteria even through a flash pasteurization then a typical farm that does intensive pasteurization?

Happy to address answer choice (E). That answer choice states, "Apple juice that undergoes intensive pasteurization is less likely than McElligott’s apple juice is to contain bacteria."

You mention,

Note that answer choice (E) isn't phrased in terms of containing less/more bacteria, but rather the more yes/no binary question as to whether it "contains bacteria" at all. A different brand that undergoes "intensive pasteurization" will have eliminated bacteria more effectively than any other method. Instead of "intensive pasteurization" (2nd sentence), however, we're told that "McElligott now flash pasteurizes its apple juice" (1st sentence). So by using "flash pasteurization" instead of "intensive pasteurization," McElligott is therefore not using the most effective method available for eliminating bacteria in its apple juice. Answer choice (E) also isn't stated in absolute terms--just that the one using intensive pasteurization is "less likely" to contain bacteria (so, this accounts for them potentially starting with different levels of bacteria--it's possible that McElligott's has less bacteria in the first place, but we can still infer what is likely/less likely based on the type of pasteurization alone).

I'm struggling because I thought that the flash pasteurization was intensive? Since it doesn't say how quickly the heating and re-chilling process was, I thought it could be heated for an hour.

There are so many things unsaid, I'm struggling with how to determine what is something you can safely assume and what is something you can't assume. For E, quickly heating could be 10 minutes or 3 hours depending on what our comparative knowledge? Maybe most pasteurization takes 48 hours so 3 hours would be quick. Or for C, we don't know if McElligott's juices are naturally bland because they don't have a good recipe or maybe all the other citrus juice companies have a bland recipe and Mc's is always more flavorful?
