Complete Question Explanation

Strengthen. The correct answer choice is (C)

This stimulus deals with the issue of illegally copied videogames, and one company’s response.
Ditalgame plans to implement a new type of copy protection to protect its games, which have been
commonly subject to pirating (the illegal creation of unauthorized copies). The president of the
company has predicted that this move will lead to a significant increase in company games’ sales,
after the new copy protection has been implemented.

The stimulus is followed by a Strengthen question, so the correct answer choice will somehow link
better copy protection with increased sales, bolstering the presidents claim that better copy protection
will likely lead to more of the company’s games’ being purchased.

Answer choice (A): This choice provides a reason that the company needs a substantial increase
in sales—that would be the only way for them to recoup the money required to implement the new
copy protection system—but this does not support the claim that such protection is likely to increase
game sales.

Answer choice (B): This choice provides that Ditalgame’s market share has significantly decreased
over the past few years, as the market for computer games has grown. This choice provides no
insight into Ditalgame’s actual sales, which might have been increasing during the past few years (all
that we really know based on this choice is that the company’s share of the market—its percentage
of the overall pie—has decreased).

Regardless, this answer provides no support for the notion that the new copy protection will lead to
increased sales, as the company president claims, so this choice should be eliminated.

Answer choice (C): This is the correct answer choice. If, as this choice provides, the new copy
protection leads to an increased desire to purchase the game, this provides clear support for the
president’s case that sales are likely to increase as a result of the new copy protection.

Answer choice (D): This answer choice supports the notion that the company’s games appear to
be well regarded, at least by some, but that would not strengthen the president’s case that copy
protection will result in increased sales.

Answer choice (E): While this choice might seem appealing at first, it provides only that Ditalgame’s
products are frequently copied—perhaps they are just the easiest to copy, or maybe they are the
most popular among players who are never willing to pay for games. Regardless of the frequency of
illegal copies, more copy protection would not necessarily translate to increased sales.

I don't understand the interpretation to C. Is it saying they are playing the copied game until the protection feature gets in and they like it enough they will just go ahead and buy the game?

Hi Whardy!

For this question, we're trying to strengthen the president's prediction that the new copy protection software will result in a substantial increase of sales. Answer choice (C) strengthens that prediction because if people are able to play the game just long enough to decided they have to buy it, that should increase sales. It's basically saying that instead of allowing people to just play the entire game for free (which they can currently do due to illegal copying), the new software will allow people to essentially have a free sample of the game and, after experiencing that sample, people will decide it's worth spending money on.

Hope this helps!

Best,
Kelsey
