Hi,

I understand why D is correct, but can you explain why C is wrong? Thanks!

Hi CFloyd,

There are a couple of problems with Answer C.

First, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee wasn't historical background for the Freedom Rides. The two events happened roughly at similar times. (It is true that the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee was formed in 1960 and the Freedom Rides began in 1961, but both of these were two events that were influenced by the sit-in demonstrations.)

The best support in the passage to answer this question is actually at the end of the second paragraph (where the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee is first mentioned) rather than the third paragraph. This sentence explains that the sit-in demonstrations influenced two important events that followed, the formation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Freedom Rides.

Another problem with Answer C is the use of the word "summary." A summary of the historical background would be a statement/description of the most important historical points for background/context. This is not what the discussion of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee does. Instead it is an example of one of the major events that grew out of the sit-in demonstrations, which is best described in Answer D.
