I’m having a little trouble understanding part of the explanation for Question #2 on p. 497 of the LGB. I don’t understand why the placement of the CD block leaves “just three possible “basic” positions for D. I do understand why C and H cannot be next to one another though!

Hi N,

That means that on that side opposite of E, there are only three open spots available to D: next to A, middle, or next to B. The same is true for C, but since D was in the question stem, I was focusing on where it could go first (and thereafter how that affected C).
