Pattern Game 1 video from L7 HW

Hello, I just finished watching the Pattern Game 1 video, and I followed along, however, I can't figure out how Jon arrived at the five patterns in which he then proceeded to answer the questions. I understand how the questions were answered once the patterns were determined, but I'm looking for some help on how he arrived at Pattern 1: 1-3-5; Pattern 2: 1-2-4..etc. Thanks!
