Hello,

Can we use process of elimination to arrive at this answer? Since all the other answers are unrelated to the quote, that seems to be one way to go about it. Or is this more obviously connected to the author's conclusion in another way?

Thanks,
Kwaku

Hi Kwaku,

You could always use the process of elimination to get to the right answer. Here, the author states at the beginning of the passage that he believes that the process of antidisciplines helps grow science through their interactions with original disciplines. That is the exact same sentiment echoed in the quote in this question stem. Calling the competition between the disciplines a "vitality" and "lead to novelty" in the future, the quote by Fruton supports and reaffirms the author's position that the competition is good for the advancement of science.

However, you could also eliminate answer choices (B) through (E). Answer choice (B) is wrong because the quote isn't providing new evidence, it's restating something that already has been said. Answer choice (C) is wrong because it's the author's position, not the biochemists'. Answer choice (D) is wrong because it's not discussing difficulties in the synthesis of disciplines. Answer choice (E) is wrong because it isn't favoring one discipline over a different discipline.

Hope that helps!
