is A correct because we can support it, especially given the order of paragraphs, while E isn't correct because we don't know for sure that this is true?

In line 45 we learn that biochemistry, which studied the enzyme theory of life, was "partially transformed into the new discipline of molecular biology." Since the theory was in existence before this new discipline came about, (A) is correct.

Answer choice (E) is incorrect because although the passage mentions that the "debate then raging" over protoplasm was going on around the same time, it does not tell us when that debate began. So there is not enough information in the passage to conclude that the enzyme theory was formulated at the same time as the "beginning of the debate" as (E) claims.
