I got E for my answer and see why B is the right answer, but I still think E makes sense. Isn't the author explaining how people's interpretation of Luminism and its purpose used to be one way and has now changed to a new way?

Pat, the best reason to eliminate Choice (E) is that it does go far enough. The author's purpose is revealed in line 12 when he offers a different way to look at Luminist painting (which he continues to do throughout the rest of the passage). It's true that the author has given some history on the misinterpretation--but the author's main goal is to replace that misinterpretation, not just point it out.
