Consider what's been said above - answer choice (E) is incorrect because it's too extreme. That's its major problem - the author does think the scholars at line 32 made a mistake, because they both questioned the "golden age" narrative but accepted a framework that seems to presuppose the very narrative they questioned. So the author has at least a somewhat negative opinion toward these scholars. Those arguing for answer choice (E) were incorrect because "without merit" is too extreme, but it is on the right "side" of things - the author's opinion is negative, and answer choice (E) is negative. So compare answer choice (A). That's entirely, strongly positive. That's completely opposite to the author's view about the scholars.
