Hi Powerscore staff,

I understood why (E) is the credited answer yet not sure why (D) is wrong. One species of insect, for me, might be a component of an insect class. Is it wrong because species is already a collective noun; thus (D) uses the reasoning from a smaller group to a bigger one?

Thanks!

tetsuya,

In answer choice (D), the biologists are not studying the elements of the classification "insects" separately, but instead studying only ONE element of that. In the second paragraph, the investigators are studying all the elements, not extrapolating from just one. And yes, that's reasoning from one example to a generalization about a wider class, something not present in the relevant part of the passage.
