I ended up choosing (D) over (B) because while the passage says "...create protest fiction that explored the negative effects of racism in the United States," (B) says "historical novel that re-creates actual events that occurred as Black people suffered from oppression and racial injustice in a small town."

Was I wrong to assume that "historical novel" means nonfiction?

Hey itstanaya,

A historical novel is fiction, so this does not rule out this answer as correct. Anything described as a novel is technically fiction. Colloquially, I will hear people describe non ficiton books as novels, but they are doing so incorrectly. The LSAT is very literal in their meaning of words, so a novel is always fiction.

The answer choice is correct because we were looking for an answer choice that described a work of fiction that portrayed racism people were actually experiencing and provided some type of message, which answer choice B does.

I hope this helps.

Best,
Ryan
