I can't vouch for other third party test preparation materials other than PowerScore's, although I am familiar with all of them. Suffice it to say, any book on this list is adequate, but as an instructor I always recommend students begin with official material, that is, start with the ETS books. ETS develops the test, and their questions have the benefit of being:
- Official
- Well-developed
- The most representative of what you will encounter on the test
For me, it's a no brainer to start with official material. In addition, ETS makes many resources available for free, including but not limited to all the items listed in last week's blog post:http://blog.powerscore.com/gre/new-feature-question-of-the-week
The major drawback of ETS's material is that the instruction it provides in how to solve problems will not help students deduce the best approaches possible to solving problems quickly and efficiently. This is where third-party material comes in. While all the books listed at the above site are adequate, both personally and professionally, I highly recommend the material we develop, the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning Bible. They are updated yearly and reflect our latest research into the GRE as well as our proven-effective problem-solving approaches. These books are available from us and from other retailers:
